A tough game this was always going to be, with half a defence. Marlow 4's were young, full of energy and hungry for a win. From the off set they dominated the game. Sonning were on the back foot for the entire 1st period and didn't we know it.
Marlow passed the ball around the pitch beautifully, using the entire width and using their skill to dance around Sonning players. We were slow, lacked pressure and many a time stood and watched Marlow play around us.
Marlow not only scored two great goals in the first period, they also used Sonning defence as target practice. A few injuries picked up, but all superficial thankfully.
Half time came quickly and we identified our mistakes and looked at how we could use our strengths to pull this game back. Everyone was on board, ready to get back out there and make our mark.
Straight away Sonning looked dangerous taking the ball in to the D and pressurising Marlow's defence. They quickly hit back on a counter, which was nicely stopped by the defence. Sonning drove straight back, with a pass in to the D. Marlow's GK made a great dive, deflecting the ball in to the path of Elodie, who nicely followed the ball with her stick, GOAL! Sonning quietly walked back to eth half way line. Captain shouts...."did we just score a goal?" YES.....well lets celebrate then!
Quickly Marlow came back at us, gaining a short corner. Goal. 3-1 to Marlow. Sonning quickly retaliated and dominated the rest of the game. Saran Wrighton took full advantage of a disorganised Marlow defence and scored.....GOOOOAAAAAL. Celebrations came thick and fast this time.
With 8 mins left on the clock, Sonning dominated the remainder of the time, with shot after shot in the D, but with no goal. The whistle blew and we had to make do with a 3-2 loss.
Special thanks go to Gemma Mitchell who stepped up and covered defence and then Nina Sharp for also stepping up in to defence. Not a easy job when you hate defence!
Well done to both of our goal scorers, Elodie and Sarah W. Also, a big thanks to the team for working hard until the end.
